“Debbie’s really fun and kind, she’s a really nice teacher. She makes me inspire my creativity, I’ve been learning how to write my own music. You should definitely have lessons with her.”
“Since going to Debbie my technique has improved massively. I started to see results really quickly. Debbie really cares about what you want to do with your voice, she cares how you feel.”
“As soon as you arrive there, Debbie puts you at ease. She’s an expert at what she does, she knows how to get the best out of you, she knows how to make you feel confident comfortable and relaxed. When you do that you find out a very strange thing — oh yes, I can sing after all!”
“Debbie is an excellent music teacher. I started from scratch with the saxophone and she was so patient it gave me so much confidence to persevere with it. That was seven years ago and I feel I really can play the sax now, we do duets or she accompanies me on the piano – she really is multitalented and makes every lesson fun. I can’t praise her teaching skills enough and really look forward to my lesson each week.”
“I had been wanting to take singing lessons for a long time but was nervous at the mere thought of it. After speaking to Debbie on the phone and then going along for my first lesson I wondered why I’d been so worried. She put me at ease straight away, gave me the confidence I’d been lacking and I really enjoy the lessons too”
Some frequently asked questions
Studying voice from age 17 with an Opera Coach, I completed Grade 5 ABRSM. I continued to study voice and clarinet as part of my degree at Liverpool Hope University 1993-96. I have a PGCE in secondary music and I have been teaching since 1997.
Performing all over the UK and abroad as a solo singer/songwriter, I became very interested in the working of the voice to make sure I maintained my instrument. I started studying again with a vocal tutor, exploring Opera, Musical Theatre, whilst I was out performing Pop, Rock, Blues/Jazz and Soul styles. I learned how to adapt the voice and how the various styles use different vocal techniques and support. I started singing lessons with an Estill Practitioner in 2014 for a period of four years.
I attended the 5 day Classical Voice Training Course ‘Singing and Teaching Singing’ by Prof Janice L Chapman in 2017 at Chetham’s School Of Music, Manchester. Lead by a team of multidisciplinary professionals.
Music Tuition is based on £38 per hour. £30 for 45 minutes and £19 for 30 minutes.
Some students book a block of music lessons and others pay as you go.
You can choose what you want to play or sing. I never restrict a student and always teach according to your interests and ability. However, if you are doing an ABRSM music examination then there is a syllabus criteria which we would need to choose your pieces from.
If you are playing an instrument then you would need to bring that with you. Get in touch and I can guide you to rental options if you don’t have your own.
If there is a piece that you would like to play or sing then bring it along with you and that would make a great starting point for your music lessons.
To progress and improve with anything it takes practice. How quickly do you want to hear or feel results?
10-15 minutes per day to get started. Once you commit to 10-15 minutes it will most likely then become 30 minutes. Yey!!
Getting started each day is what is important and I will guide you on how to practice with purpose.
This depends on what you want to achieve or learn. The more you want or need to learn then the longer the lessons.
The most significant thing about learning music is that you enjoy the journey and experience. Music can be studied for a lifetime.
I always do my best to accommodate a student. I am flexible 3 days a week, so please let me know any changes as soon as possible.
I make notes of progress and development. After 10 weeks I will write a brief report of work covered and achievement. Please contact me to let me know you would like to discuss how your child is getting on and we can arrange a time that suits. I leave a gap between music lessons as an opportunity to catch up at the end if needed.
If you have booked block music lessons with me then I would require 4 weeks notice to cancel our agreement. To all students your music lesson will be charged to you if you give less than 48 hours notice.
You do not need to be able to read music to start music lessons. I will assess your level and create a bespoke teaching scheme just for you. I think it is important to explore different elements of music so it is not just about always ‘reading from a score’ For example I will get you to improvise and make up pieces using scales or a selection of notes. This is fun and not as scary as it sounds!
If you are a singer I will teach you the skills to become familiar with a score so you have the option to follow one if needed.
You can do but it is not essential. However you may feel more confident starting your first lesson with something you know. You can bring sheet music if you have it or just lyrics written or memorized. If you have been practicing to a backing track then bring it along or we can get it up on my computer and we can play it through my speakers. I will go with what works for you.
